3D Computer graphics are those that use a three dimensional data and is stored in a computer for the purpose of rendering 2D images. The process of 3D animation is broken down into three phases:

3D modeling- The model is a description of the process of forming shape out of an object. The most common source of 3D models is those created on a computer by an engineer or artist using a 3D modeling tool.

Animation- Before you can go to the process of 3D rendering you must place an object within a scene. This is what helps to define the relationship between objects and a scene. Animation is the temporal description of an object, which basically means how it will deform and move over period’s f time.

3D rendering- Rendering helps to convert a model into an image by using light transport to get a realistic image. Or you can do so by applying a style like non-photorealistic rendering.  This step is usually done by a 3D computer graphic software or APL.

3D computer graphics rely on the algorithms that 2D computer graphics do. The difference between 2D and 3D in computer graphic software is sometimes blurred.  Many 3D computer graphic images are called 3D models.  A 3D model is a math representation of any 3 dimensional items or object.

You can give credit to computer graphics to William Fetter who coined the term in 1961. One of the very first computer animation graphics was Future world in 1976. This included an animation of a human hand and face that was created by Ed Catmull and Fred Parke in the University of Utah.
